Focal Point Athletes Strength and Conditioning Training Summer Camps
for Middle and High School Girls and Boys

Designed for the student athletes who want to stay in top shape over the summer and develop a definite competitive edge when they return to sports in the fall. The focus of sports performance training sessions will consist of functionally sound movement training, strength training and conditioning with a strong focus on basic and proper technique. The training sessions will become progressively more challenging once techniques have been mastered. The groups are kept small, no more than 10 per group, to allow maximum individual attention.

Program Highlights:

Speed- acceleration, deceleration, linear and lateral movement techniques, running mechanics and foot work
Explosive power- plyometrics, medicine ball, jumping and landing techniques
Functional approach- thorough instruction, focus on upper body, lower body, and core conditioning- game-ready preparation for all athletes.
Flexibility- myofascial release (foam rolling), various stretching techniques, muscle activation
Injury prevention- identify and correct muscular imbalance, balance, and stabilization.

Training sessions begin: June 10th – August 2nd (High school)
July 11 – August 2nd (Middle school)

Friday is conditioning for all groups at Shadow Ridge Park. Time TBD

Cost: $250 for 3 days a week for the months of June and July. Payment due at the time of registration. Accept cash or check for payment.

May 9th Blood Drive for Local Student Fighting Leukemia

Footlights Dance Studio is Hosting a
Carter BloodCare Blood Drive

We are excited to tell you that we have scheduled a blood drive with Carter BloodCare at the studio on Thursday, May 9th, in honor of our sweet Olivia Smith!

Olivia is 11 years old and has been dancing with us for 5 years. She is being treated for Leukemia at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas since this past October.

The Carter bloodmobile will be here from 4:30-7:30 on May, 9th.

This will mostly be for parents. Older students must be ages 17 and up. Age 16 needs a parent to be present.

We are signing people up ahead of time to assure a spot. Walk-ins are welcomed if there is time.

If you are able/ interested in donating in Olivia’s honor, please sign up for a time slot at the front desk.

Summer Camps for Kids!

At Painting with a Twist, they do FUN art, not fine art! Their kids camps have a featured painting each day. A local artist will walk the kids through step by step creating the painting. Paintings go home with the kids at the end of each daily session. They provide snacks and drinks! The number of kids attending each day is limited to ensure kids receive the help they need from our artist! The minimum age is 8. See Paintings and reserve your spot online!

June Camps - June 10 – 14th, 10am – noon
July Camps - July 15 – 19th, 10am – noon

$35 per day, per child includes all the painting supplies, aprons for the kids to wear, snacks and drinks.

Kids attending all 5 days of each session will receive a $25 gift certificate that can be applied to the cost of the week long camp OR used for any regular class (kids class or adult class) in the future. (The gift certificate is valid for 6 months from date of issue and is not valid for private parties, fundraisers, special events or custom paintings.)

We all deserve time off and a fun night out with the girls, right? Well, in case you haven’t found it yet, we have a hot spot in town…but beware, it comes with a warning: Bring your friends, your bottle of wine, a little bit of food and you risk the chance that you will want to return again and again!

At Painting with a Twist in Flower Mound they believe that everyone can paint. Everyone has an inner artist; it simply takes the right setting, the right paintings and talented, caring instructors to bring out the hidden Rembrandt in you!

The goal at Painting with a Twist is to have lots and lots of fun, and in the process, create a legitimate painting that you will be proud to hang on your wall and call ‘Art’. So here’s the drill. Check the calendar on their website to see the featured paintings of the day. Choose your favorite, grab a friend, some wine and come to the studio on the specified day (reservations are advised).

Owner, Denise Montgomery says, “Our instructor will guide you through each step of recreating the featured painting and you’ll have created a piece of art before you know it. Have a sip and paint a stroke and you will find your inner Rembrandt!”

Although Painting with a Twist primarily caters to adults, they love kids too! They have hundreds of paintings for kids and family days that are scheduled a couple of times a month.

Family Day painting classes run for 2 hours. Parents can stay and paint with their child or drop the off for painting fun while the parents have a couple of hours to themselves. The minimum age for children is 8.

If you want the studio to yourself, book a private party and pick one of over 2,000 paintings that are available. Great for bachelorette parties, girls night out, church functions, even corporate team building events are a blast at Painting with a Twist! Pick the painting from their gallery or let them create one specific to your business.

Your group will have an artist take everyone through, step by step, creating their version of the painting. See everyone’s personalities come out in their creations and see your team accomplish something they thought they couldn’t do!

Sacred Ground Dance opened its new studio doors in June of 2012. It is a non-competitive dance studio that focuses on building a solid foundation in technique with a creative approach. They appreciate the art of dance and desire to bring their love and joy of movement to others.

Owner of Sacred Ground Dance, Jen Christensen, grew up in New Jersey, attended the Somerset County’s High School of the Performing Arts Dance Program and graduated with honors at Hofstra University in Long Island with a BA in Creative Studies with an emphasis in Dance. Being near NYC, she took various classes and workshops at D.N.A., Peridance and Broadway Dance Center and danced professionally with AP Motion Dance Company in New Jersey, as well as performed in many community theater musicals.

Jen started SGD in 2011 with just 4 tiny dancers in a 10-week session held at a home. After the end of the semester, the performance video made it’s way to facebook. She had requests for more classes almost overnight! It was then that Jen searched for a space to sublease (a home just wasn’t going to handle the 45 new students!).

In December 2011, she met Liza Doll (Yogi Kids) who was having the same problem! They combined their efforts under 1 roof and now both have a beautiful new studio that offers a wide range of dance, yoga and fitness classes for kids, adults and families!

Jen says, “We are less expensive than the other studios in our area, especially since we do not have a registration fee or recital fees. Our costume fee is also much lower than others. This is especially important to me because as a young child I had to work at my dance studio in order to pay for my classes and competition fees.”

Although it was a great learning experience, Jen feels strongly that money shouldn’t be a deciding factor on whether or not your child should have the experience of learning to dance.

SGD offers classes in ballet, pre-pointe, tap, jazz/contemporary/modern, hip hop, musical
theater and small group voice lessons. They also have a performing dance group and a children’s chorale which will perform throughout the community.

Mealtime Monday: Layered Shrimp and Avocado Salad

Layered Shrimp and Avocado Salad

6 cups torn romaine lettuce	1 sliced red onion
2 cups chopped tomatoes	1 package (10 oz.) thawed frozen peas
3 diced avocados	1 cup jarred Thousand Island Dressing
1 lb cooked shrimp

Directions

In a 14-cup trifle bowl, layer romaine lettuce, chopped tomatoes, avocados, shrimp, red onion and t peas. Spread 1 cup jarred Thousand Island dressing evenly over the top. Scatter 6 pieces crumbled fully cooked microwavable bacon over dressing.

Makes 6 servings. Prep time 15 minutes

How Do I Connect with My Kids When I’m So Busy?

Often times as parents, we get so wrapped up in the business of life that we forget the purpose of it all. The Monday through Friday routines are filled with work and school followed by a ton of extracurricular activities. Between soccer practice, band, school plays, piano lessons, and scouts, we don’t have time for much else in our lives. Not to mention the yard work, laundry, dishes, and day to day chores that have to get done for the household to run on time. Parents can be so overwhelmed with homework, chores, and extra curricular that they sometimes lose focus of the little person sitting in front of them.

The question then becomes what is more important? We often get side tracked and the focus becomes getting them in this activity or that activity with no left over time for family closeness and connection. Meals often get shuffled to whose take out is the best and what is the fastest on our way to and fro. Lets not even get started on the evenings when Little Johnny comes to you with a book report due the next day or Mr. Jones who has handed out enough 4th grade homework for a college student to struggle with.

So what happens when the rush, rush, rush becomes the center of our lives? We lose the opportunity to connect with our kids. As parents, we may think we know what they like and who their best friend is, but do they agree? Or do they feel like their parents don’t know them at all? Connecting with your kids is about creating the environment for them to feel comfortable to be themselves and open up to talk to you. They want to feel heard and validated. Its about building that trust that if they do have a bad day, they feel relief that Mom or Dad will be there for support. Connecting with your kids involves more than just telling them that you will “always be there for them,” it’s about building that trust and proving it to them.

Try these 6 easy ideas to connect with your children:

1. Step Into Their World. What does your child love most? What is he or she into? You may loathe Justin Bieber, but if your kid is into his music learn about him so you can talk about it. Not into sports, but your child is…get into them. Have your child teach you about what he or she is into. One of my favorite commercials has a Dad answering the door dressed in a football jersey, make-up, earrings, and a tiara. Right beside him is a little girl beaming because her Daddy just spent time in her world.

2. Play With Them. Whether it’s board games, leggos, painting, crafts, Barbie, or puzzles. Whatever your child enjoys playing most, take the time to do it with them. Children express themselves through play. Ever wondered why your kid’s favorite time of day is recess? Because they get to play. They process their world through play. Get down on the floor and play with them. You will be surprised what you learn from them. Not to mention what you can teach them. A truck telling a car, “Please don’t yell at me when you play with me,” is great for teaching children to be assertive with peers. When play is involved, children feel less threatened. You become on their level and it does not seem like a lecture.

3. Kidnap them to go Camping. Aaahhh, the fresh air, wilderness, silence, no electronic media, and family. An adolescent’s worst nightmare. True there may be some grunting and groaning about this one, but what better way to bond with your kid than to take them into the woods and camp for the weekend. You are forced to talk. So take your kids and leave the chaos behind. Feel free to throw in a little Truth or Dare around the campfire or take some cards and board games to help get the talking started.

4. Family Mealtime. There is a reason the research out there supports family connection with sit down meals together. Its not about the home cooked meal (although I certainly agree with promoting that), it is about the time spent together without distractions. No television, texting, or telephone calls. Just family togetherness sharing love, laughter, and even uncomfortable silences. The truth is even when families have conflict, continuing to promote the family meal time teaches your kids how to work through things and not avoid them. So whether you ordered a pizza or all worked hard together as a family in the kitchen to make a 3 course meal, sit down and share it together. Allow everyone the opportunity to talk about their day and what is on their mind.

5. Go for a Drive. Sometimes when you have multiple children, it is hard to focus on one child. Take the time to once a week take one child out for a drive. Not for errand running, but for ice cream, hot chocolate, or to feed the ducks. This allows your child to have your undivided attention so he or she can talk freely about whatever is important. It alleviates the pressure of having to censor him or herself in front of siblings or to avoid being teased later. Finding the time to spend half and hour alone with your child promotes that feeling of “I matter.”

6. Accept the Silence. Sometimes their little minds are busy thinking. Hanging out together can often end up in silence, especially with teens. Silence is okay. Maybe you are sharing a meal or going for a drive and your child seems bothered but not willing to talk just yet. It’s okay to back off and sit in silence. Maybe their anxiety is too much to tell you just yet. But as you accept the silence, you allow time for your child to express him or herself to you when ready. Accepting the silence can surprise you. Sometimes they work through it themselves with you just being there because your presence gives them the courage to figure it out on their own. Then they come back and tell you all about what happened and how they handled it.

ARThouse was founded by a family of artists for the sake of art! It has become a home for creativity in the community. They proudly serve the DFW communities both in-house and in partnerships with area schools and community centers.

Founded in 2000, ARThouse is owned by Anita Robbins. Anita received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University. She has taught workshops and private lessons for over 10 years and has been a university guest lecturer on watercolors. Her students placed highest honors at the Texas State Fair the last three years, including two Best of Show awards. Anita herself has been the recipient of several awards and recognition including be chosen as one of D/FW’s best artists featured in the 2009 and 2010 CityArtCal Calendar.

Footlights Dance Studio in Flower Mound is in its 16th year as a Christian owned and operated dance and musical theatre studio offering dance classes for ages 22 months through adult. Give your high school or middle school athlete the edge over the summer!
The focus of sports performance training sessions will consist of functionally sound movement training, strength training and conditioning with a strong focus on basic and proper technique. The training sessions will become progressively more challenging once techniques have been mastered. The groups are kept small, now more that 10 per group, to allow maximum individual attention

What is the difference between a gym and a personal training studio? The studio is not a small gym with a lot of weight machines, crowded spaces, competition and social hours. The purpose of the studio setting is to get you into shape and to show you a more efficient way of doing so. When you come into the studio, you should be ready for a serious workout and in return you will see serious results. In the studio, you will find medicine balls, kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells, resistance bands and other exercise equipment to get you into shape.

Focal Point Personal Training uses a systematic approach to training. Each client is put on their proven system and works through each step with a personal trainer in either a private or small group setting. The client can work through the phases of the system at their own pace. With the trainer, clients will work on corrective movement, resistance training, core stability, nutrition and flexibility. With this systematic approach, Chuck says, “We will not waste our client’s time or money. We are a results driven business and we want to see the results just as bad as our clients.”

Summer Camps at Color Me Mine!

Color Me Mine Flower Mound is offering a Summer Camp to keep those little artists busy and creating while out of school!

The camps consist of a morning class (9AM – 12PM) or afternoon class (1PM – 4PM) each day, Monday through Friday. Each class features a technique or fun item to paint, kids can mix and match classes they are most interested in or sign up for the entire week!

The classes are meant for children 6 and older and snacks will be provided so painters don’t get hungry. Children enrolled in a morning and afternoon class should bring a lunch and will watch a movie between classes.

Reservations and payment are required in advance. Call Color Me Mine for reservations.

Mathnasium is celebrating their 1st birthday in Flower Mound and you’re invited to a party!

At Mathnasium, summer programs are all about preventing summer learning loss and helping students prepare for what lies ahead.

For some students, that means a solid review of previous material. Others benefit from previewing upcoming concepts. Most students will get some of both. Summer programs are available to all currently enrolled Mathnasium members. Summer-only Mathnasium memberships are also available. Two or more sessions per week, about 60–90 minutes per session, is the ideal schedule for this program. See specific summer programs below.

Mathnasium is a math learning center in Flower Mound. In their words: They make math make sense. Center Director/Owner, Shital Patel’s, love for teaching can be traced back to childhood when her favorite role playing activity was “school”. Fast forward 9 years with a bachelor of science in Mathematics Education, a Master of Science in Instruction and Curriculum and years of experience teaching mathematics to kids from 6th – 12th grade, she has now opened the Flower Mound location of Mathnasium. Shital says, “My passion is teaching children mathematics and I love to see the expression on students’ faces when they have their ‘ah-ha’ moment.”

At Mathnasium, it’s more than just math tutoring. It’s a learning center where kids can go after school to boost their math skills, and have some fun while they’re at it. They teach math in a way that makes sense to kids. Each child is given an assessment upon enrollment, then they receive one-on-one instruction and a customized learning plan based on their individual needs. The results are an increase in overall confidence, better school performance and a more positive attitude towards math.

What are some of the reasons Mathnasium is different from other tutoring centers?

Teach only mathematics which means better results since that is their only focus.
Qualified teachers customize and lead each student through the learning plan.
Spent 30 years perfecting their proven and proprietary curriculum for math that is not available anywhere else.

Math is not always everyone’s forte, but there’s no need to worry. We have our local Mathnasium here to the rescue. They make math fun an easy to understand for students. The fabulous tips below were given to us by Mathnasium – The Math Learning Center in Flower Mound.

Summer: A Great Time for a Fresh Start

As the end of the school year approaches, it may be tempting to view the upcoming summer holiday as an opportunity to take a break from math for the time being—especially if your child is less than enthusiastic about the subject. On the contrary, with the pressures that come with school temporarily on hold, summer may just be the perfect time for you to help your child start afresh with his or her performance in and attitude towards math! Here are some things you can do now as you formulate a plan to reinvent the relationship between your child and math.

Schedule a meeting with your child’s math teacher. Ask the teacher about your child’s performance in class, skills covered during the year, and any other helpful feedback about your child’s behavior and attitude towards math. This conversation is a great starting point and will give you the insight you’ll need as you decide how you can best help your child.

Meeting with your child’s math teacher should leave you with a fairly accurate sense of what to expect in terms of final grades. While you should always encourage your child to do his or her best in school, understand that if your child is extremely behind in math, it might not be realistic to attempt to salvage final grades at this point. In cases like this, it may be best to look ahead—things you can do going forward to ensure that the following school year ends on a much higher note.
Did you know that during the summer, kids can lose approximately two months worth of math learning gained during the school year? Fend off the dreaded “summer slide” by seeking out kid- and math-friendly summer activities and projects that will help your child boost math skills. Mathnasium offers fun and flexible summer programs tailor-made to address your child’s problem areas in math. Give us a call or stop by—we’ll be glad to speak with you about how our program can help your child, or simply give you some helpful suggestions on how you can work some math-related fun into your child’s summer schedule.
Summertime math fun can also come in the form of math games you can play at home, or simply seeking out “teachable moments” such as using cooking to teach your child about measurements and proportion or shopping to work with money and basic addition and subtraction. At Mathnasium, we believe that “mathing” with your kids is just as important as reading to them. Showing your child the more enjoyable side of math during leisure time can do wonders to change negative attitudes toward the subject. Engaging in these types of activities also reinforces how having solid math skills can make life easier and benefit your child in the real world.
Sit down with your child and have a year-end review—an honest conversation about his or her performance in math and academics in general. Use this conversation to gain a sense of your child’s attitude towards math and school and get on the same page regarding long term academic or career goals. Ask your child about ambitions and goals and help him or her understand that doing well in school is a critical step in making these dreams come true.
During this talk, it’s so, so important to stay positive, optimistic and encouraging, especially if your child didn’t do too well and final grades aren’t looking pretty. Bring up the possibility of working on some math over the summer and together, research options and check out summer programs. Reinforce the fact that good, honest effort yields results. Change is possible, and there’s a strong chance that the grades you’re seeing this year won’t necessarily be the grades you’ll see next year. Getting your child to buy in may seem like an uphill climb at the beginning, but the benefits will make it all worthwhile.
