Do Today’s Parents Listen Too Much?

Kids need to feel heard, but sometimes as parents we are unsure when we need to set limits on the listening.

When does listening become manipulation?

Sometimes our children can be so convincing that they are “right” about why it’s okay that they are allowed to play video games during the week because Tommy’s parents let him, that they simply refuse to accept the word “No.”

As children grow and mature it is natural for them to question rules and ask “why?” As parents, it is our job to allow them the opportunity to express how they feel but at the same time maintaining the security of limits.

How can children feel they are able to express how they feel without being disrespectful of their parents’ authority?

This is where Family Meetings come into play. It is basically like a staff meeting for your house. Parents are the Supervisors who call the meeting and maintain order. There is an agenda for the meeting and all family members are allowed to bring up specific issues (see outline below). The issues are discussed and voted on with Parents having the final say. So the next time Suzy wants to discuss why she can’t have sleepovers 2 nights in a row or that Sarah has more chores than Jacob, parents can suggest they bring it up in the family meeting and it will be voted on during that time.

Any discussions on change in rules or questioning of rules will only be discussed during family meeting time. It is best to have a family meeting scheduled for a time that is convenient for all family members to be there. Place them on the calendar and at the end of each meeting decide when the next family meeting should take place. Typically families hold them twice a month, but they can be held weekly if necessary.

•   A parent heads the family meeting. It should last no more than 30 minutes.
•   Each person writes down something to talk about and presents it to the family.
•   Everyone can say something about the problem but there is no yelling, blaming, or interrupting.
•   Always end a discussion about a problem with 2 possible solutions.
•   Family meetings are not just about problems. They should include plans for activities and how to spend family fun time.
•   End each meeting by having family members say one thing they appreciate about everyone in the group.

Mealtime Monday: Veggie Fetti Noodle Pie

This recipe is a family pleaser that’s loaded with yummy veggies. The kids won’t even realize that it’s so good for them. The great news is that it only takes about 10 minutes prep time. We got this recipe from Home Made Simple.

Veggie Fetti Noodle Pie

Cooking spray	4-6 ounces fresh spinach
1 pound penne pasta, cooked al dente according	2 teaspoons salt
to package directions	1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil	1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1 red bell pepper, diced	6 eggs
1 zucchini, diced	1 cup ricotta cheese
1 yellow squash, diced	1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1. Preheat oven to 325°F and coat a 9×13” baking dish with cooking spray.
2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add bell peppers, zucchini and squash, then sauté 3-4 minutes. Stir in spinach and cook an additional 2-3 minutes, until spinach is barely wilted. Season with salt and pepper.
3. In a large mixing bowl, toss pasta with cherry tomatoes and sautéed veggies. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and ricotta cheese. Pour mixture over pasta and veggies, then stir to combine well.
4. Pour into baking dish and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake until cheese bubbles and casserole is heated through, about 40-45 minutes.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Spotting dyslexia may be possible before kids even learn to read

Scientists have argued for decades about why roughly 10 percent of the world’s population has dyslexia or reading difficulties.

Bright and verbal, people with dyslexia have trouble with the written word. But can the problem be solved before it even begins? Identifying children with dyslexia as preschoolers could lead to better solutions, saving years of frustration in school. Researchers in Padua, Italy, tested kindergartners who had not yet learned to read. Those who did poorly on visual attention tests were more likely to struggle with reading later on. Screening children at a very young age could prevent reading struggles that often follow people well into adulthood.

Scientists have argued for decades about why 10 percent of the world’s population has dyslexia. Theories include difficulties recognizing chunks of words or problems processing visual signals or issues ignoring extraneous sounds.

Many programs have been devised to help children and adults with reading difficulties, but none solves the problem. Since learning to read is such a big part of early childhood, it makes sense to think that identifying children with dyslexia as preschoolers, before they learn their ABCs, could lead to new and better ways to help. The scientists tested 96 kindergartners who hadn’t yet learned to read, asking them to identify specific symbols amid distractions. The youngsters also were asked to identify syllables, name colors quickly and remember things they were told. Researchers continued to test the children over the next two years as they learned to read.

The kindergartners who struggled with the visual attention test were the ones who later had trouble with reading. The results were published in the journal Current Biology.

If preschoolers are screened with a simple visual attention test, the researchers conclude, children with dyslexia could get help much earlier and potentially avoid years of struggle in school and adulthood.

Indeed, many adults with dyslexia were never diagnosed as children. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Philip Schultz says he figured it out only after his 7-year-old son was diagnosed with the learning disorder. Other research has shown that entrepreneurs are far more likely to have dyslexia. One theory is that they develop formidable skills at working with people to compensate for their problems communicating using the written word.

Experience a Wildflower Walk at The Flower Mound on Saturday, May 12, 2012 between 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. rain or shine in honor of National Wildflower Week.

The Flower Mound is located at 2452 Flower Mound Road near the northeast corner of FM 2499/Long Prairie Road and FM 3040/Flower Mound Road in Flower Mound, Texas.

This Flower Mound is the namesake of the town Flower Mound, Texas. Nineteenth century settlers named the site The Flower Mound for the profusion of wildflowers that grow there every spring. Individual citizens saved this historic landmark from the plow and developers for decades and in 1982, through the efforts of Otto Consolvo, its 12.6 acres were set aside forever as a native prairie preserve. The mound is is currently protected by the Mound Foundation, a non-profit organization representing the citizens of Flower Mound. The foundation has identified more than 175 species of wildflowers there.

Visitors to The Flower Mound can enjoy a short walk among native Texas wildflowers. Expected blooms this weekend are Bluet, Engelmann Daisy, Indian Blanket, Mexican Hat, Prairie Larkspur, Purple Horse Nettle, Sensitive Brier and Yarrow.

A path starting at the southwest corner of The Mound leads to the summit and then returns down to the southeast corner of the site. While on the summit, visitors looking southeast can see a beautiful panoramic view of the Dallas skyline.

Self-guided tours are along a natural terrain path. Hikes to summit take less than 15 minutes. There is an easy to moderate incline. Additional parking is available in the adjacent Tom Thumb shopping center.

The Flower Mound will be one of several sites included in the Denton County Master Gardeners Association’s 2012 Spring Garden Tour this weekend.

Mealtime Monday: Easy Cheesy Broccoli Rice

Our family loves broccoli, so this easy recipe is a no brainer, side dish at our house. Super fast to make and tastes very good too! You can make it with low fat cheese and save some of the calories too. Thanks Better Homes & Gardens!

Easy Cheesy Broccoli Rice

1 10 oz. bag frozen broccoli (may also use fresh)	1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. quick cooking rice	1 c. shredded cheddar or swiss cheese
1 c. water

Directions:

In a medium saucepan combine frozen broccoli, uncooked rice, water, and salt. Bring to boiling, stirring frequently to break up frozen broccoli.
Remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Return saucepan to burner. Over low heat, add cheese, stirring just until cheese is melted. If desired, serve in bowls and sprinkle with additional shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese.
Makes 6 servings.

Swimming is a favorite American pastime. It’s fun, great excercise and, in Texas, is part of the summertime survival plan. Giving your kids the gift of swimming lessons is not only a gift that can save their lives, but one that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

AquaKids^® in Flower Mound is a Swim School that was started in 1999 by Kathy Kline, after teaching swim lessons for 12 years. Kathy’s mission is simple. She says, “We want to provide the highest quality swim lessons in a safe, non-stressful environment while ensuring the best possible experience for students, parents, and staff.”

AquaKids® Swim School is a year round aquatic development center that provides a fun and creative learning environment for children. They specialize in teaching children to swim, beginning at 6 months of age through swim team. The warm 92° water allows your child to enjoy each lesson, without chattering teeth. Children ages 3 and older will have just 4 students in each group class, so this means lots of one-on-one time with the instructor. Focal Point Athletes Strength and Conditioning Training Summer Camps
for Middle and High School Girls and Boys

Designed for the student athletes who want to stay in top shape over the summer and develop a definite competitive edge when they return to sports in the fall. The focus of sports performance training sessions will consist of functionally sound movement training, strength training and conditioning with a strong focus on basic and proper technique. The training sessions will become progressively more challenging once techniques have been mastered. The groups are kept small, no more than 10 per group, to allow maximum individual attention.

Program Highlights:

Speed- acceleration, deceleration, linear and lateral movement techniques, running mechanics and foot work
Explosive power- plyometrics, medicine ball, jumping and landing techniques
Functional approach- thorough instruction, focus on upper body, lower body, and core conditioning- game-ready preparation for all athletes.
Flexibility- myofascial release (foam rolling), various stretching techniques, muscle activation
Injury prevention- identify and correct muscular imbalance, balance, and stabilization.

It’s Time for a Texas Blowout!

Meant for dogs with thick or long haired coats (ie. Labs, Collies, Shelties, Great Pyrenees, etc)
First a wash with de-shedding shampoo and spray, then a super duper blowout that removes the undercoat and all loose hair. You will be amazed at the results and decrease in the shedding.

Priorat, Spain

Priorat is like European wine on steroids; in fact, it’s not completely off-base to say that it tastes like Port, if Port were a dry wine instead of a dessert wine. It’s that powerful.

For lovers of rich Aussie Shiraz or California Zinfandel, Priorat is Europe’s answer to those wines, and yet it is never out of balance, never to high in alcohol and is still both refreshing and complex.

Try pairing this wine with the recipe below:

Sausage and Chickpea Soup

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil
8 to 10 ounces chorizo sausage, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
1 to 1 1/2 cups acorn squash, cubed
1/4 cup fresh parsley, minced
1/2 teaspoon each, salt, white pepper
1/4 teaspoon smoky paprika
1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup dry white wine
6 cups soup stock (vegetable or chicken)
2 cans (15.5 oz each) chickpeas, drained and rinsed

Directions:

Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add chorizo sausage and cook until lightly browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from heat and drain on paper-towel-lined plate.

Return saucepan to medium heat. Add extra oil if necessary and add onion and celery; sauté for about 4 to 5 minutes or more until translucent and lightly browned.

Return chorizo to saucepan. Add remaining ingredients and bring to boil over high heat. Once the soup reaches a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover with lid and let cook for 20 minutes or more. Season to taste before serving.

LEGARIS VERDEJO,
RUEDA, SPAIN

Verdejo is often likened to Sauvignon Blanc; it’s no coincidence that some Spanish winemakers have laced their Verdejo with a little Sauvignon Blanc. But Legaris’ version expresses the best Verdejo: yellow and green pears, citrus and a lot of texture and mineral. Something crisp like Sauvignon Blanc, but something very different, too.

Try pairing it with the recipe below:

Homemade Salmon Gravlax

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons sea salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 1/2 pounds salmon fillet, skin on
One 4-ounce tube fresh dill (or substitute 1 1/2 cups dill springs, rinsed, or 3/4 dried dill)
3 tablespoons gin

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix sugar, salt and pepper.

Inspect salmon for bones; remove and discard. Rinse salmon and pat dry. Place salmon skin-side down, in a glass dish. Sprinkle evenly with sugar-salt-pepper mixture and cover evenly with dill. Sprinkle with gin and cover pan airtight with plastic wrap.

Nest another dish of the same size on top of the pan and weight it down with canned goods or pie weights (2-3 pounds).

Refrigerate for 48 hours; about ever 12 hours, uncover, baste salmon with juices, rewrap and replace weights.

Remove weights and unwrap salmon. Scrape off dill, rinse and pat dry with paper towels. Lay salmon, skin down, on a board; cut into very thin diagonal slices and release fish from skin. Transfer slices to serving platter; discard skin.

Serve with think crackers or toast points and an assortment of toppings, such as fresh dill springs, chopped boiled egg, finely chopped purple onion, capers, thinly sliced tomatoes or cucumbers and stone-ground mustard. I threw mine on the grill for a couple minutes and it was out of this world!

ARThouse was founded by a family of artists for the sake of art! It has become a home for creativity in the community. They proudly serve the DFW communities both in-house and in partnerships with area schools and community centers.

Founded in 2000, ARThouse is owned by Anita Robbins. Anita received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University. She has taught workshops and private lessons for over 10 years and has been a university guest lecturer on watercolors. Her students placed highest honors at the Texas State Fair the last three years, including two Best of Show awards. Anita herself has been the recipient of several awards and recognition including be chosen as one of D/FW’s best artists featured in the 2009 and 2010 CityArtCal Calendar.

At the ARThouse, you will find museum quality weekly art classes for kids (ages 3+), teens, and adults. Students learn by creating original works of art using a curriculum designed to teach and inspire. The students learn by using well established techniques and the latest in art technology. The art classes are uniquely designed to foster creative expression and artistic development in every student.

Studio Art House is the place to learn about real art from real artists. All of their instructors are experienced and degreed artists. No matter what level of artist, their students excel and produce amazing results in a very short time.

In addition to weekly art classes, ARThouse also offers home school classes, summer art camps, art birthday parties, and art classes for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Their students have fun drawing, painting and sculpting, while learning from a structured art curriculum. They also host professional workshops in oil painting, watercolor, fashion design, jewelry, clay sculpture, ceramics, and more!
