Learning Rx - Flower Mound LearningRx is a Brain Training Center that opened in November in Flower Mound.  What is Brain Training, you might be wondering?  It’s much more than just tutoring your child through a subject, it’s actual training for the brain.  Just like motor skills, these skills can be enhanced and improved through regular training.  Exercising your ‘mental muscles’ makes the brain stronger, faster and more effective, leading to improved reading, focus, problem solving, and memory.
LearningRx offers a permanent fix, not just a band-aid.  They help children and adults with ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, Attention issues, reading problems and more.
Local residents, Eric and Alicia Welch own the Flower Mound/Highland Village location of LearningRx.  Eric says, “My wife, Alicia, and I were looking for something that would help our youngest son with his poor memory and reading.  We knew he needed more than tutoring.  After lots of research, we found LearningRx.”  At that time, the closest location was Frisco, so they headed there.  “We found out that LearningRx is really the only place that works on strengthening and improving someone’s cognitive abilities and IQ.  The program makes a lot of sense and we signed our son up for their 24-week program.”  Their son has enjoyed greater results with the program than they imagined.  They decided they wanted to bring this program to the Flower Mound/Highland Village area so they opened up their training center.  Eric says, “We’re already seeing changes in our student’s lives.  It’s been a joy and blessing to be a part of LearningRx.”  Learning Rx - Flower Mound Tutoring, ADHD
LearningRx - Flower Mound ADHD, Tutoring, Dyslexia So what should you expect when walking into the training center for the first time?  Your child will be given an assessment to find his/her cognitive strengths and weaknesses.  This skills testing allows the trainers to develop an individualized, one-on-one learning skills training program for your child which will be as little as 12 - 24 weeks.  Your child learns (or struggles to learn) for a reason.  LearningRx can identify that reason and improve your child’s core ability to learn and read.

They use a scientific approach to leaning, so they are able to assess scientifically, the progress that your child is making throughout the process.  Some of the areas that are worked on for strengthening and improving are:

  • Visual Processing – Ability to form and manipulate accurate images in your mind…essential for math, reading comprehension, and many forms of problem solving.
  • Memory Skills – Weakness in this skill is often the unseen culprit in a student’s inability to follow instructions.
  • Auditory Processing – Difficulty in hearing the difference between words or the order and number of sounds in a word.
  • Word Attack Skills – This enables a person to segment and articulate new or unfamiliar words.  When coupled with an auditory processing weakness, a student is sure to struggle while reading new material.
  • Processing Speed – The ease and speed with which a student handles incoming information is the basic boundary of his or her learning efficiency.
  • Logic & Reasoning – Planning and problem solving requires a person to recognize the connections between things.  Weakness in this skill obscures those connections and bogs down the learning process.

This is what others are saying after trying LearningRx for their child:

When our daughter came to LearingRx, our family time was zero due to lengthy nights of homework and studying.  We had tried a private tutor, after-school programs and lots of praying, but nothing seemed to work.  My husband and I decided, ‘Why not try LearningRx?’  We had done everything else we knew to do.   Thank goodness we did,  It was like nothing we had ever seen.  She no longer calls herself ‘dumb’ or ’stupid’.  We actually eat dinner as a family again!”
mother, Sylvia S., daughter age 12.

The Bee Hive – New Home Decor Store by former Distinctions Owner

The Bee Hive Home Accessories in Flower MoundFormer owner of Distinctions, Sherry Taylor, sold the store in 2006 so she could spend more time with her high school aged kids.  Now her kids have left for college and she is ready to reignite her passion of creating beautiful floral arrangements and home decor.  She has joined forces with Anna Treadway and opened the new store, The Bee Hive in Flower Mound.  Together, they have also teamed up with creative artists Mona Simpson of Athletic Bling and Debbie O’Donley of Exciting Images Photography.

This is not your typical home decor store.  Sherry says, “I want to offer and create original, one of a kind pieces that will not be easy to find at any of the franchise stores in town.  My newest passion is repurposed art and furniture…something else you won’t be able to find down the street.”

They also offer market samples at discounted prices that change on a weekly basis and will be limited in number, so you will have to stop in often for the best finds.  They are open only on Thursdays and Fridays from 10am – 5pm, to allow time to shop market and allow the creative juices to flow so they can bring you fabulous home accessories, jewelry, bling spiritwear and much more.

This week, through December 23rd,  they will be open every day from 10am-5pm and are offering 40% off All Remaining Christmas Decor.  When I stopped in I saw gorgeous swags, ornaments, ribbons, wreaths, garlands and lots more at 40% off already low prices.  Stop by and take a look for yourself!

Cinnamon Caramel Apple Martini

Add a holiday twist to create a not-so-typical apple martini.  Perfect for the adults at holiday celebrations.  Beware:  they go down s-m-o-o-t-h!   Thanks to Betty Crocker for this scrumptious grown up beverage recipe!

Cinnamon Caramel Apple Martini
1 oz Buttershots Schnapps Cinnamon
2 oz vodka Brown sugar
1 oz Rose’s Sour Apple Mix Caramel syrup
Maraschino cherry Candy cane and fresh apple slice for garnish

Directions:

1. Sprinkle some brown sugar and cinnamon on a small plate. Pour caramel syrup on top of the sugar mixture in a circle. Dip the rim of a martini glass in the mixture and spin back and forth and all around until the whole rim is coated. Place the glass in the freezer until ready to use.

2. In a shaker with ice, add the Buttershots, the vodka and the sour apple mix. Shake for a minute. Remove glass from freezer. Place one maraschino cherry in the bottom of the glass. Pour mix from shaker into glass. Garnish with a Candy Cane and an apple slice.

Please be responsible and don’t drink and drive after your holiday fun!
