Flower Mound Family will donate $1 for each New “like” on Facebook in October!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Grandmother.  Mother. Sister. Friend.  Almost everyone  knows someone who has had to face the challenge of breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Organization estimates that over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and of those women, 40,000 will die each year.  1 in 8 women either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  Breast cancer can happen to anyone, even men.  Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year.  My mother, and local resident, is a breast cancer survivor, so this cause is very close to my heart.

FlowerMoundFamily.com will again raise money this year through new facebook “likes” through the month of October.  For every new “like” that we receive in October, we will donate $1 to the Susan G. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, often referred to as simply Komen, is an organization supporting breast cancer research.  Since its inception in 1982, Komen has invested over $1.5 billion for research, education and health services, making it the largest breast cancer charity in the world.

Now it’s easy for you to help raise money for the cure.  The donation that you help raise through your friends on facebook, will be donated in honor of breast cancer survivor, mother of FlowerMoundFamily.com publisher, and Highland Village resident, Pat J.  We also donate it in honor of all the Flo Mo/HV neighbors that are currently courageously fighting this disease.

*The fine print:   FlowerMoundFamily.com will donate $1 (up to $500 maximum) for every new “like” posted on our facebook page beginning on October 1, 2010 and ending on October 31, 2010 at 11pm.  We will begin calculating the number of new “likes” after 370, the number of likes currently active on the page.

The good news is that with early detection the 5 year survival rate for breast cancer  exceeds 96 percent.  The mammogram is among the best early detection devices, along with annual professional check-ups and monthly self examinations.  The national cancer institute recommends that women over 40 get annual mammograms every 1 to 2 years.  Unfortunately, over 13 million U.S. women over 40 have never had a mammogram, some of them due to lack of insurance and/or funding options.   You can visit the breast cancer site, with the link below, for an easy and free way to help women in need receive a free mammogram. All you have to do is click the link on their homepage and you will be helping fund a mammogram for a women who cannot afford one.  For the month of October, all clicks will count double, so don’t forget to click everyday.  Since The Breast Cancer Site began in 2000, together we have funded more than 18,600 mammograms for women in need. 

Another company that is making the difference in the lives of woman facing cancer, is the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation.  Fighting cancer is difficult enough, but living with it is even tougher – and that’s where the Cleaning for A Reason Foundation steps in.  Founded by local business owner, Debbie Sardone of Buckets & Bows Maid Service, this  nonprofit offers free professional housecleaning, and maid services to improve the lives of women undergoing treatment for cancer – any type of cancer.
